Portland Timbers v Vancouver MLS
The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps are both founding members of Major League Soccer (MLS) and have been competing against each other in the league since its inception in 1996.
The Timbers and Whitecaps have a strong rivalry known as the Cascadia Cup, which also includes the Seattle Sounders. The supporter-owned Cascadia Cup Council awards the trophy annually to the team with the best head-to-head record in matches between the three clubs.
Both teams play their home games in soccer-specific stadiums. The Timbers play at Providence Park, which has a seating capacity of over 25,000, while the Whitecaps play at BC Place, which has a retractable roof and a seating capacity of over 22,000.
The Timbers won their first MLS Cup in 2015, defeating the Columbus Crew 2-1 in the final. The Whitecaps have yet to win an MLS Cup, but they did reach the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals in 2017, which is the farthest the team has advanced in the tournament.
Portland has a dedicated supporter group called the Timbers Army, known for their passionate and vocal support of the team during home matches. Vancouver also has a strong supporter culture, with groups like the Southsiders and Curva Collective leading the way.
Both teams have had success in the U.S. Open Cup, with the Timbers winning the tournament in 2015 and the Whitecaps reaching the final in 2002. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States, featuring teams from all levels of the American soccer pyramid.
